President Uhuru Kenyatta has thanked the United States over killing of Al–Shabaab leader Ahmed Abdi Godane, who ordered the attack on Westgate Mall in Nairobi.

In a statement Saturday, President Kenyatta said Kenya and its allies will “do everything” to secure the country and the region.

“We owe the United States and its soldiers our heartfelt thanks for bringing an end to Godane's career of death and destruction and finally allowing us to begin our healing process,” he said.

President Kenyatta said Godane led the planning and was responsible for the perpetration of the attack on Westgate.

“His death is a stark reminder that those who live by the sword shall perish by the sword,” he said.

The Head of State said Godane’s death will give ‘a small measure of closure’ to Westgate attack victims.
