Forty Chinese nationals arrested in November 2014 in Nairobi's Runda Estate on suspicion of running an unlicensed telecommunications system were acquitted on Friday.

In her ruling, Senior Principal Magistrate Joyce Gondani said prosecutors failed to prove the charges levelled against the suspects.

However, the court ordered that the 35 Chinese and 5 Taiwanese be deported to their respective countries.

They had been charged with a running telecommunications system without a license, conspiracy to commit a felony and engaging in organised crime.

They had denied the charges.

Police arrested the foreigners after responding to a fire reported in a residential house in the wealthy Nairobi suburb. One Chinese national died during the fire.

Several mobile phones, laptops and routers were found in the house.
