Fire razes Githurai furniture market

Traders are counting losses after property of unknown value was destroyed in an early morning fire that started at a furniture shop at Githurai 44 area on Monday morning.

According to area residents, the fire whose cause is yet to be established, began at around 4am and spread fast into the adjacent shops where it consumed more furniture and items stocked in the stalls.

"The firefighters started arriving at about 4:50am. Lots of items had been burnt but we managed to salvage a few furniture," Lucy Njeri, a resident told Nation.

The salvaged items were strewn along the road forcing motorists moving towards Githurai to source for alternative routes to access the market.

At 8am firefighters from Nairobi and Kiambu counties as well as the Kenya army joined efforts to put out the fire.
