Bitonye retires from Council of Legal Education

The long-serving Council of Legal Education (CLE) chief executive officer Kulundu Bitonye has finally retired after several failed attempts to kick him out.
Prof Bitonye, who left office late last month, has since been replaced by Dr J.K. Gakeri in an acting capacity.
Prof Bitonye confirmed toNation that he had retired from the council, which regulates legal education. “I left CLE at the end of January,” he said.
He was promoted to the position of chief executive of CLE in 2006.
In 2016, a petition that sought to remove him was filed at the National Assembly on allegations that he was illegally occupying the office. The petition had alleged that in 2014, he was irregularly appointed the secretary to the council.
The petition had also alleged that Prof Bitonye was born in 1952 and, therefore, he was past retirement age.
However, the tenure of the last Parliament ended before the issue was disposed off.
During his tenure, he differed with the Head of Public Service Joseph Kinyua over his retirement and that of board members.
He insisted the new CLE amendments passed by Parliament, which capped CLE tenure to three years from the previous four, did not affect the current body.
