12,080 teachers seek promotions from TSC

A total of 12,080 teachers have submitted their details to Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) asking for promotion from their employer – the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), after attaining higher academic qualifications.
Data compiled by Knut shows that 257 teachers with master’s degrees, 6,370 with bachelor’s degrees and 5,453 with diplomas want to be promoted.
Knut and TSC are currently engaged in a battle over promotion of teachers who have attained higher qualifications and the issue is before a conciliation committee chaired by Charles Maranga who is on Wednesday expected to present a report to the Labour Court.
The conciliator was appointed by labour Cabinet Secretary Ukur Yatani in December in order to avert a teacher’s strike which had been called by Knut over promotion, transfers, performance appraisal and teacher professional development programme.
Nakuru branch has the highest number of teachers who want promotion at 401, Mumias has 338, Bungoma North has 312, Kitui has 382, Butere has 242 while Kibwezi has 382 among others.
Knut Secretary-General Wilson Sossion said there are more than 30,000 teachers who have attained higher qualification since 2014 but most of them are yet to receive acknowledgment letters from TSC in order to enable them seek promotion.
