Deputy President William Ruto and Murang'a Governor Mwangi wa Iria have condoled the family of the late Kenneth Matiba following his death on Sunday at the Karen Hospital.

DP Ruto described the late Matiba as a patriot whose contribution will remain unforgettable in the history of Kenya.

"He was a passionate politician, indefatigable and forthright operator. He applied himself to his duties with exceptional enthusiasm and diligence, always determined to succeed," said the DP in a statement to newsrooms on Sunday.

Murang'a Governor Mwangi wa Iria praised the late Matiba for his "invaluable and immeasurable" contribution towards making the second republic, the multiparty era.

Mr Matiba fought for democracy at a great personal cost after he was detained without trial by the State at the height of clamour for multiparty politics.

In September 2017, the High Court revised an earlier ruling decreeing the State compensates him Sh471 million for damages.

Court judge Chacha Mwita ordered the State to pay the politician Sh945 million for damages and violations suffered and a further Sh18 million for expenses incurred for his medication.
