Boinnet: Kenya police involved in Akashas extradition
Kenyan police played a major role in the extradition of the Akasha brothers to the US to face drug trafficking charges, Inspector-General of Police Joseph Boinnet has said.
Mr Boinnet said Kenya security agencies collaborated with their US law enforcement agencies in investigating the two brothers — Baktash and Ibrahim — their arrest and subsequent deportation.
“Who told you anybody was arrested by foreigners? We did the arrest ourselves…obviously, this is an international web, it involved other partners from foreign jurisdictions,” said Mr Boinnet while responding to questions from journalist on Saturday evening.
He was speaking Uhuru na Kazi building shortly after meeting Coast regional commissioner Nelson Marwa and top regional police chiefs to discuss war on illicit drugs, terrorism and electioneering security arrangements.
He however, declined to comment whether their extradition was legally conducted and referred journalists to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.
He urged the public to provide information to the police especially in the coast region so as to rid it of drugs.
“This county has suffered the atrocity of illicit drug menace because of few selfish individuals but we are determine to eradicate the menace,” added the IG.
On terrorism, he said his officers will remain vigilant to deal with any threats from Al Shabaab and other terror groups.
Mr Boinnet also warned that severe punishment would be meted on anyone found breaking electoral laws during this electioneering periods.
He further assured Kenyans of elaborate security measures during the electioneering period adding that mechanisms have been put in place to secure the country.
