Alexander Kahi appointed Egerton vice chancellor

Prof Alexander Kahi has been appointed as the new Egerton University vice chancellor in acting capacity.

Prof Kahi takes over from Rose Awuor Mwonya who was sent on a 90-day compulsory leave on September 7 over corruption allegations.

"Following the decision to send Prof Mwonya on compulsory leave, she ceases to act in all positions. The council has facilitated the handover of the office of the VC to Prof Kahi, the Deputy VC, who has taken over all responsibilities," the Monday statement says.

Egerton University Council announced the appointment and asked the Inspector General of State Corporations to investigate the claims levelled against Prof Mwonya, and file a report within 60 days.

Prof Kahi had been the deputy vice chancellor, Academic Affairs.

ACCUSATIONS

Mr Joshua Otieno, who chaired the session, said there is no management crisis at the institution.

The management added that it has taken steps to ensure the university is running smoothly as investigations continue.

Prof Mwonya is accused of supervising a biased allocation of scholarships, spending Sh44 million to put up an electric fence that failed to work, and investing Sh180 million in Ngongongeri University Farm - which has not been profitable.

She is also faulted for authorising the construction of a gate worth Sh70 million. However, she has denied the allegations.
