CS Amina condemns killing of three teachers in Wajir

Education Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed  has condemned the killing of three teachers in Wajir County by suspected Al-Shabaab militants.

In a statement, Ms Mohamed said the incident at Qarsa Primary School was regrettable.

The Teachers Service Commission Chief Executive Nancy Macharia also condemned the attack noting that the teachers were committed to their profession.

“At the Ministry of Education, we have been in touch with the school administration, security agents and leaders in Wajir County,” said the CS.

She went on : “ This abhorrent assault has brought immense pain to those who have lost their loved ones and great distress to our country and especially the Ministry of Education and the teaching fraternity.”

“On behalf of the Ministry of Education, and on my own behalf, I express our deepest sympathy to the families who lost their loved ones as well as those who were affected by the barbaric attack.’

The CS said the attack on Qarsa is an important reminder to  Kenyans  that learning institutions in Kenya, as in other countries across the world, remains a soft target for terrorists.

“The Ministry of Education is alive to this reality and has formulated appropriate measures and guidelines in order to ensure the safety of our learners, teachers from terrorism and other threats,” said the CS.

She appealed to all stakeholders and partners in the education sector to partner with us in mobilizing the necessary resources needed for this exercise.

“The Ministry of Education and the entire teaching fraternity stands in solidarity with everyone affected by this tragedy,” said Ms Mohamed.

Meanwhile, the Teachers Service Commission has identified the slain teachers.

Macharia named Seth Oluoch Odada, Kevin Shari and Ms Caroline, the wife of Seth.

“The teachers were committed to the profession that Seth had even moved his wife Caroline to Wajir who also died in the attack. The commission wishes to condole with the families of the teachers during this difficult time,” said Mrs Macharia in a statement.

She said officer from the commission received the bodies at Wilson airport and took them to Chiromo mortuary and will work with the families for further arrangements.
