TSC suspends 160 defiant teachers

A total of 160 teachers have been suspended by the Teachers Service Commission for disrupting the competency-based curriculum training conducted in April.
In individual letters sent by the commission’s county directors of education, the teachers were directed to stay away from duties. “You are therefore interdicted with effect from 3/5/2019,” read the letters.
TSC communications director Kihumba Kamotho on Tuesday said the 160 include five executive secretaries of the Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut).
Mr Kamotho said the teachers face deregistration from the TSC if found culpable. “The cases are being handled by TSC county directors of Education. Each will be dealt with according to the TSC Code of Regulations,” he said.
TRAINING
Among the reasons for the suspension are neglecting their duties by refusing to attend the curriculum training and inciting teachers who were attending the training.
In April, 91,320 teachers were trained on the new curriculum. The training faced strong opposition from Knut officials who accused the ministry of implementing it illegally.
Knut secretary-general Wilson Sossion has accused the ministry of implementing it without a sessional paper.
