Opposition leader Raila Odinga has postponed his visit to the United States due to the extreme weather conditions expected in North Carolina.

The push was announced on Wednesday following advice from Duke University in Durham, which was to host him from September 16 to 19.

HURRICANE FLORENCE

Mr Odinga's visit was to begin on Friday.

"Duke University advised that an extremely powerful hurricane, Florence, is expected to land on the North Carolina coast early Friday. The university is therefore on concerted effort to weather the storm," his spokesman Dennis Onyango said in a statement on Wednesday.

Mr Onyango said the university told them the forecast shows Durham will remain under extremely dangerous weather conditions from Thursday to Sunday.

As a result, classes from Wednesday afternoon to Sunday have been cancelled.

The ODM leader's lecture has been pushed to October.

Mr Odinga is currently in Ghana for the burial of former UN Secretary General Dr Kofi Annan. Following the cancellation, he will return to Kenya after the burial.
