Tough week for Federer fans

What you need to know:

  • In 2016, the Swiss player took a six-month break that is largely credited with fuelling his astonishing performance last year.
  • Under the blazing sun on Monday afternoon, Federer overcame Hungary’s Marton Fucsovics in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6(7-3), 6-2, to book a place in the quarterfinals.

It is that time of the year when Roger Federer’s multitude of fans again believe that the seemingly impossible is possible.

The 36-year-old Swiss tennis player is three matches away from winning a 20th Grand Slam title at the Australian Open, where one year ago he secured his 18th in spectacular fashion - a five-set thriller against the current world number one, Rafael Nadal.

Federer has kept going on and on, keeping himself in top form for more than a decade, and in the process, amassed a massive following of fans worldwide for his exquisite style of play.

Some tennis pundits had written him off a while ago, believing that another Grand Slam title was beyond him. They were wrong. It’s anyone’s guess how many titles he can add if his current form persists.

What’s certain however is that the tennis fraternity would like him and Nadal to keep at it, the duo’s rivalry being responsible for catapulting the sport to global recognition.
