Superlative Stephen Nkaiwatei from Kigari stole the show Wednesday when he won a double at the ongoing Kenya Training Teachers College National Athletics Championships in Tambach, Elgeyo Marakwet.
Nkaiwatei first showed his class in men’s 1,500m dominating the field to cross the line in 4:02.30 before taking hold of the 5,000m race and the midway stage to finish first in 15:03.70.
“I had done enough training and during the holidays I didn’t go home so that I could train for this event,” said a satisfied Nkaiwatei
Joshua Kipyego from Mosoriot finished second in the 1,500m race in 4:08.2 with Naeku Kalool from Kaimosi third after timing 4:08.5.
In the 5,000m race, Nkaiwatei broke away after five laps in a controlled pace to run clear. Wycliffe Kupar from Eregi came in second after clocking 15:05.5 while Mailu Nyamai from Kitui sealed the podium in third in 15:29.0.
Mosoriot’s Emmy Chemutai, added her second gold when she won women’s 1,500m to add on to her 10,000m title she won the previous day.
Chemutai winning time was 5:03.4 as Dorine Chepkemboi from Meru followed in 5:16.9 and Joyce Jebichii of Egoji third with a time of clocking 5:19.4.
