Dan Sserunkuma to leave Gor Mahia for FC Banants in Armenia

Speculation about Dan Sserunkuma’s imminent departure from Gor Mahia have finally been confirmed.
The Ugandan striker has formally presented a transfer request to the club expressing his desire to join Armenian league side, FC Banants, which he attempted to join midway through the just concluded season.
Gor Mahia’s top officials on Tuesday confirmed that indeed the player was leaving the club saying that they are now awaiting a formal bid from the club in question.
Club secretary-general, George Bwana, however, said they will respect the player’s wishes but the club’s initial asking fee will be a minimum of Sh8 million.
Bwana’s assistant, Ronald Ngala, said: “Sserunkuma presented a letter of request yesterday (Monday) which the club is considering. Now that we are on recesses we may not stop him. We think it’s only fair to let him go because he has served us diligently,” Ngala said.
MAJOR CONTROVERSY
Sserunkuma stirred up a major controversy midway through the just ended season when he left the club for trials with the Armenian outfit and reportedly impressed his suitors only for Gor Mahia to decline to release him.
His attempted move came at a time when his strike partner Rama Salim had also left the club to join the paid ranks in Qatar. Eventually, Sserunkuma returned to the club and secured his place in coach Bobby Williamson’s first team. His fine form towards the end of the season helped Gor Mahia to clinch its first league title in 18 years.
The 2012 KPL Player of the Year, who joined Gor Mahia in June last year for Sh 450,000, still had 13 months left on his current deal.
Sserunkuma has been Gor Mahia’s leading goal scorer in the last two seasons. Last season his 17 strikes brought the club agonizingly close to clinching the league title.
His goals tally was only bettered by Sofapaka’s John Baraza who scored 18 goals.
Although he only scored 8 goals this season, he still topped K’Ogalo’s goals scorers’ chart. He is also in the running to retain the KPL Best Players’ Award this season after being nominated for the award alongside AFC Leopards striker Allan Wanga, KCB’s Jacob Keli, Shaban Kenga of Bandari and his club team mate David Owino.
The KPL Footballer of the Year Awards will be held tonight at Safari Park Hotel, Nairobi.
