Kiprono wins third leg of KCB golf series

  • At Vet Lab, the team of Margaret Nyakang’o, Loreen Gibson and Wambui Gitonga posted 92 points to win the Kabete Ladies Invitation tournament sponsored by Stanbic, Mikalla, Kenya Sweets Ltd and Catapult Brand Consulting.
  • It was however a tight finish as the winners had to beat the team of Grace Waiganjo and that of Anne Mululu on countback.
  • In the individual category, Margaret Njuguna on 35 points was the member winner, winning by one point from Agnes Nyakio, while Golf Park’s Faith Ontune was the guest winner with 34 points.

Despite picking up three double bogeys, home player Jackson Kiprono still managed to put together a brave 39 points and claim the top spot in the third leg of the KCB golf series at the nine-hole Eldoret Golf Club course at the weekend.

Playing off handicap 20, Kiprono double-bogeyed the fourth and eighth, both par fours, then picked up a five at the par three-16 hole, to beat men winner Kamar Manek on countback.

Manek also playing off 20, picked an early birdie at the second hole, having dropped two shots at the par five-first, however more doubles at the 13th, 14th and 17th saw him finish with 17 points at the back nine. He had carded 22 at the front nine.

Kitale’s Simon Chepkwony posted 38 points to finish second in the men’s section as Jane Koech also on 38 claimed the ladies prize, while Newton Ongalo of Kakamega carded 39 points to clinch the guests prize, with Eliud Siganga also a member of Kakamega, taking the staff prize.

George Njoroge won the nearest to pin, while Sanjay Dodhia and Anabwani Amino were awarded the prizes for the longest drive contest. The event attracted 99 players from the North Rift region and as far away as Kakamega, Nakuru and Kisii.

At Ruiru Club, captain Peter Mwaura returned an impressive 44 points to win the Vice Captain’s golf day tournament.

He was six points away from the men winner Patrick Karoki, who carded 38 as Susan Mukuri on 36, beat Susan Kanyora by two points.

The nines went to Nganga Kanene and Anthony Mwangi on 21 points each. Isiah Nderitu emerged the best among the guests with 34 points.
