Machakos Golf Club, the only golf club in the former Eastern Province, is once again the place to be this weekend.

Fresh from hosting the Massmart Supermarket Chairman’s Prize golf tournament last weekend, the nine-hole course, will on Friday host the Kabeberi golf tournament sponsored by members of the very famous Mwamba Rugby Club, some of whom are also golfers.

This particular event, which Machakos Club captain Paul Musembi Katuku hopes to have it as an annual event, is in memory of the late Mwangi Kabeberi, one of the founder members of Mwamba.

It will also serve as curtain-riser for the Kabeberi Sevens rugby tournament also being staged in Machakos this weekend.

“We as Machakos golfing fraternity are most grateful to members of Mwamba for choosing to have a golf event before their rugby series.

“I sincerely hope that they will be doing it annually, and as a club we are more than willing to give them all the support," said Katuku.

A field of 100 players was drawn though captain Katuku said he is expecting more players to enter as post entries.

Among those drawn are Mwamba members led by their chairman George Mbaye while others will be Lavin Asego, Humphrey Kayange, Alfred Kweya, Edwin Teya, Edwin Waita, Newton Ongalo and Vincent Orinda.

Some of the club members, who will vie for the fabulous prizes besides captain Katuku, include the club’s top amateur James Ndunda now playing off handicap three.

Ndunda shot an impressive three under par 43 to claim the chairman’s prize last weekend.

Other top players eyeing the top prize are Francis Njeru (7), Dee Kivuva (12) and Charles Kimiti (11). Njeru carded 39 points to beat Kimiti on countback for the second prize.

Teeing off for those drawn in the morning is set for 7am and 11am for the afternoon draw. Tomorrow, Machakos will host the Ladies Invitation.

Away in Nakuru, the par 73 Nakuru Golf Club course will host the Gold and Platinum golf series whose first leg was hosted by Njoro Country Club on August 4.

Besides golfers from Njoro and Nakuru, organizers of the event have now extended an invitation to other clubs such as Nyahururu and Kericho and any other club willing to participate.

Event organiser Wanjiku Kiragu says the guests clubs will win a trophy and some individual prizes as long as each club will have eight players.

This weekend’s tournament has attracted over 150 players though post entries are still being accepted.

Back in Nairobi, Royal Nairobi will host the UNFCU Foundation fund raising event Friday, followed by the Crown Paints golf series on Saturday. Action also continues at Kiambu Golf Club where a field of 100 players was drawn for the K-Link Healthcare golf day.

Away in Nyanza, the 2018 Nyanza Open has attracted a small field of 40 players with the big names drawn being John Karichu of Limuru, Dennis Saikwa of Royal, another Limuru player Paul Muchangi and the Great Rift Valley Resort’s Simon Njogu.
