Kakamega High School’s football team captain Chris Alpha Onyango is confident the team that can finally clinch a maiden regional crown at this year’s Brookside East Africa Secondary School Games that get underway here on Sunday.

Alpha will spearhead his side’s title charge just two weeks after leading the Green Commandos to a record breaking 13th national football crown in Eldoret after a last-gasp 1-0 win over Olboslat Secondary School in the final.

With Kakamega not in action until tomorrow, Alpha is relishing the opportunity to become the school’s first captain to lift the coveted trophy. Kakamega will look to carry their good form during the National Term Two Games to Rwanda.

Henry Atola’s header settled the tight contest to give Green Commandos their first title since 2014 with Onyango duly lifting the title. And now the Form Three student, who also plays for Gor Mahia Youth, wants to lift the elusive regional title.

“It would be wonderful to lift yet another title in the space of two weeks and I believe we have the players to help us complete the double,” he said on Saturday.

Together with Joshua Otieno, the duo will anchor the Kakamega midfield as they look to improve on last year’s bronze medal. Onyango believes a good start will lay the foundation for a very good tournament as they bid to become the third Kenyan side to win the coveted boys’ football crown.

“Our main challenge will come from Uganda and we have got to find a way of dealing with them so as to give ourselves a good chance of going all the way,” he added.

St Anthony’ Boys Kitale won the title during the inaugural edition of the regional games in 2002 and the country had to wait until 2016 in Eldoret to win the football crown again through Siaya County’s Barding’.

Kakamega’s main opposition will of course come from 12-time champions St Mary’s Kitende of Uganda.

Kakamega will be joined by Olbolsat, who are making their debut at these games, in their attempt to bring the title back home. Elsewhere, Tanzania yet again failed to send teams to this year’s competition forcing organisers to change fixtures ahead of Sunday’s kick-off.
