Nyanza region Secondary Schools Term One Games will start on Thursday with athletics and field events set to be held at Sawagongo High School in Siaya County.

The event, which has attracted a number of junior elite athletes, is expected to be closely contested.

Anyang’o of Kowuor Secondary School will be looking to defend the region’s women 100m title which she won last year after beating Moraa of Mogonga Secondary.

Speaking to Nation Sport, Kowuor coach Evance Magware said: “The race will be tough but we are sure of winning. Anyango has beaten Moraa before and I’m sure she will beat her again.”

Anyang’o won the Homa Bay County 100m and 200m races after clocking 11.09s and 22.09s respectively before leading her team in winning both the 4x400m and 4x100m relays.

The script was the same for her arch-rival Moraa in Kisii County races as she stole the show, winning the 100m, 200m and 400m races before leading her team to victory in 4x100m and 4x400m relays.

Other upcoming athletes to watch for in the competition are 5,000m East African School Games champion Dolphine Omare and national school games shot put champion Peninah Akoth of Osingo Mixed.
