Youngster Waweru tops motorcross championship

  • Ngugi Waweru on Sunday proved untouchable, making it seven victories on the trot when he powered his KTM machine to victory in MX2 category in the penultimate round of the National Motorcross Championships at Jamhuri Park Circuit in Nairobi.
  • Waweru, who stretched his Series lead to an unassailable tally of 400 points after collecting 60 points with a clean run in three stages, relegated Rolf Kihara to second place with 51 points.
  • Maxine Wahome rolled home third for 45 points, with Alex Moi coming in fourth to get 39 points.

Ngugi Waweru on Sunday proved untouchable, making it seven victories on the trot when he powered his KTM machine to victory in MX2 category in the penultimate round of the National Motorcross Championships at Jamhuri Park Circuit in Nairobi.

Waweru, who stretched his Series lead to an unassailable tally of 400 points after collecting 60 points with a clean run in three stages, relegated Rolf Kihara to second place with 51 points. Maxine Wahome rolled home third for 45 points, with Alex Moi coming in fourth to get 39 points.

Kihara moved to second place in the Series with 286 points, with Moi third on 279 points ahead of the final leg due December 10. The final leg will also double up as the regional competition for Kenya and Uganda.

Ethan Nyachae also dominated to claim his seventh consecutive win in the MX 125 category to collect 60 points and stretch his lead to 420 points. Kigen Kiplagat again played second fiddle to Nyachae, collecting 51 points for his tally of 351 to take the championships down to the wire with only nine points separating them.

John Schraer came third for 45 points to stay third in the series but with an improved points tally of 180. Schraer is however out of contention for the category’s top honours.

In MX 85 class, the battle between James Luusa, Christian Chege and Zenny Onguso at the top intensified, Onguso claiming his first win of the season for 60 points, beating Luusa and Chege, who shared the second spot with 41 points each.

Luusa upheld the top spot with 348 points, followed by Chege on 307 and Onguso on 297. Mali Nyachae finished eighth in MX85 category.

In the absence of Rafe Garner who had 255 points and Keith Bar, who had collected 254 going into Sunday’s event, Neo Wahome dominated to win and score 60 points for his total tally of 3012 to take the lead.

Andrew Ohonde came in second, followed by Zawadi Nyachae. Tanar Choda starched his lead in MX 50 to 391 points after claiming victory, beating lady rider Atete Benzinge to second place as she improved her tally to 239 moving into the final round in December.

Wahome Mutahi came in third with 43 points, followed Mucoki Karingi with 41 points.

The East Africa Motorsports Club chairman Ken Lusa said that the event served as a good warm up race for riders ahead of the final leg.
