Bungling Gor office should be fired, chased out of town

According to a story in this newspaper on Saturday, Gor Mahia camped at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport on Thursday night hoping to travel, but it turned out that the ministry had not made the appropriate travel arrangements.

“We got to the airport but the airline said we had not been booked to travel with them so we went back to our training base to continue with preparations. We had a session early today (Friday) morning at Camp Toyoyo training as we wait for communication from the ministry," Gor team manager Jolawi Abondo was quoted as saying.

Let’s get this right. That a team of Gor’s calibre had its players assemble their travelling bags, go all the way to the airport in readiness to “climb” a plane and head to Morocco for the return tie against RS Berkane?

I am using the pedestrian term “climb” because it is inconceivable that a bunch of clueless officials with pedestrian thinking spent the day with the players at Camp Toyoyo the whole day waiting for the time to go take their flight.

That nobody thought even for a moment to call the Ministry of Sports to find out the status of the travel arrangements?

I am bringing in the ministry because this is where the Gor officials want to lay all the blame.

In my school of thinking, this travel debacle ranks high up there with treason. Treason because Gor Mahia is now at a stage in the Caf Confederation Cup where it is no longer a club affair.

The players — and the more than fair share of the airhead joyriding officials — are carrying with the dreams, aspirations and the flag of an entire nation.

I know it is hard to hammer facts into some type of heads but to put it bluntly, Gor Mahia is carrying the hopes of all Kenya, stretching from Mandera to the north to Vanga in the south as well as Laghdera to the east and Chepkube to the west.

Such a serious assignment carries with it great expectations and even greater responsibility from those put in charge.

Definitely not a the cavalier attitude the Gor officials have shown. Last week I said that Gor is run like a funeral committee of a departed village elder. Today I take back my words because members of such committees usually do a decent job.

Kenyans saw an even better organisation when the remains of the famous Omieri snake from my village in Nyakach was being transported to the Kisumu Museum.

I have said time and again that Gor Mahia is top heavy and that we need to have people who bring value to the club.

Just what is the work of a vice chairman? While at it, can someone tell me why a modern day club needs the services of a deputy organising secretary to name just but a few of the redundant posts in the club?

I think maybe it is time the club’s management was chased out of town and Gor Mahia put into the hands of people who understand the enormity of the job at hand.
